🐕 Dog
Also known as: domestic dog, Canis familiaris
Feeds her puppies milk. Not a food for humans.
Dog is a domestic animal, a long-time companion of people, kept as a pet and for work. A dog nurses her puppies on milk; a bitch usually has 10 mammary glands (from 8 to 12). In the first days she produces colostrum: puppies are born with almost no antibodies, and colostrum gives them passive immunity. Lactation lasts about three months, although puppies are usually weaned at around six weeks.
Dog milk is much more nutritious than cow’s milk: according to a small number of studies, it contains about 7–8% protein and 8–12% fat. Its composition changes quickly in the first days, adjusting to the needs of the growing puppies.
Dog milk is not a food for people, and dogs are not milked. Orphaned puppies are fed special dog milk replacers, because cow’s or goat’s milk does not suit them in composition.
