🍼 Moose calf

Young animal ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1 Updated:

The young of a moose cow.

A moose calf is the young of a female moose (a cow moose). Moose live in forests in the north of Europe, Asia and America. A cow moose carries her calf for about eight months. Calves are born in May or June. Usually one calf is born, but when food is good, twins are common. Newborns have reddish fur, lighter than that of adults.

For the first weeks, the calf drinks its mother's milk. It helps the calf grow fast during the short summer. In summer the young one already tries leaves and shoots, but milk is still an important food.

A moose calf stays close to its mother for a long time. It stays with her until the next mating season. Then the mother drives off the grown calf to get ready for new young. At nine months, the calf is almost ready to live on its own. This gives the calf time to learn from its mother how to find food and hide.
