🍼 Piglet
The young of a pig.
A piglet is the young of a pig. Pigs have many young at once, and the piglets fight over the teats. The front teats give more milk, so the competition for them is fiercer. Soon the piglets settle into a fixed order: each one suckles its own teat or one group of teats.
A sow feeds her piglets about every 50–60 minutes. But her milk does not flow straight away. The piglets first massage the udder with their snouts, and only then does the milk come. The feed itself is very short.
In the wild, piglets live with their mother and drink her milk for about 12–14 weeks. On farms they are separated much earlier, usually at 2–5 weeks. Not all piglets live until weaning: some of them die in the first weeks.
