🍼 Reindeer calf

Young animal ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1 Updated:

Also known as: fawn

The young of a reindeer.

A reindeer calf is a baby deer. Here we mean mainly the reindeer: some peoples milk its females. Calves are born in May or June. A newborn weighs about 6 kg on average.

At first the calf drinks only its mother's milk. Reindeer milk is very fatty and nourishing, so the calf grows fast and gains strength. This matters: it has to grow big enough before the cold sets in and keep up with the herd.

About a month and a half after birth the calf is already nibbling grass and finding food on its own. But it keeps suckling its mother until autumn. In autumn the calf becomes independent. For nomadic reindeer herders, the milk of female reindeer is part of everyday food: they drink it and make dairy products from it.
