📜 Istra
A joint Croatian-Slovenian EU designation for extra virgin olive oil from the Istrian peninsula.
Istra is a joint Croatian-Slovenian EU protected designation of origin (PDO) for extra virgin olive oil from the Istrian peninsula. It was registered by Regulation 2019/332 of 20 February 2019.
The name grew out of a dispute. In 2015 Croatia applied for “Istarsko ekstra djevičansko maslinovo ulje”, and Slovenia objected: since 2007 it had already had a designation for oil from Slovenian Istria. In 2017 the two countries reached an agreement: the name was changed to Istra, the area was extended to the Slovenian part of the peninsula, and the application became a joint one. The area now covers Istria County, part of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and Slovenian Istria. In southern Istria the averages are about 16 °C and 820 mm of rain; in the west and north-west, 14 °C and about 1,000 mm.
At least 80% of the oil comes from 18 varieties, among them Buža, Istarska bjelica, Frantoio, Leccino, Maurino, Pendolino and Picholine; a single-variety oil needs at least 80% of one variety. Requirements: free fatty acids up to 0.4%, peroxide value up to 12, fruitiness above 3, bitterness and pungency at least 2. Under the specification, the fruit is picked from the tree, processed within 48 hours by mechanical means only and below 27 °C, and the oil is stored at 12–20 °C. An early harvest helps avoid frosts and the late generations of the olive fly.
Amphorae found here bear the inscription Olei Histrici, “Istrian oil”; it was shipped to northern Italy, Noricum and Pannonia.
Why it matters to you. The oil is bottled only within the area, in dark glass or in clear glass with extra protection from light. The label shows the harvest year and a sticker with the joint symbol and a unique number. The symbol has two versions: a Croatian one with the letters ZOI and a Slovenian one with ZOP.
