📍 Croatian Istria
A peninsula with Malvazija and Teran.
Croatian Istria is the part of the Istrian peninsula in the northern Adriatic Sea, the westernmost area of Croatia. The rest of the peninsula belongs to Slovenia and Italy. A Mediterranean climate, hills, olive groves, stone hilltop towns and truffles make Istria a popular holiday place. Soils come in three colours: red with iron, grey and white limestone.
The main grape is Malvazija Istarska (Istrian Malvasia), a white giving fresh, aromatic wines with scents of flowers, citrus and almond. The main red is Teran, a dark sharp variety with bright acidity and scents of cherry. Other grapes include Muškat Momjanski, which makes a sweet dessert wine around the village of Momjan.
Modern wineries release Malvazija both in a fresh style and aged on the skins, producing orange wines. These wines suit seafood and truffle cooking.
Croatian Istria is part of the larger wine region “Istria and Kvarner”. For comparison with its neighbours: to the north lies Slovenia's Primorska, notably Goriška Brda, and to the west Italy's Friuli and Carso with the same grapes.
