🫙 Tub
Also known as: plastic cup, pot
Plastic packaging for yogurt, sour cream and ice cream.
Tub is a small lidded plastic container for yoghurt, sour cream and other dairy products. A plastic tub is the usual pack for yogurt, sour cream, curd desserts and ice cream. It is light and cheap, and it holds its shape well.
These tubs are made by thermoforming. A plastic sheet is heated and then pressed into a mould with air or a special die. The tub cools quickly and keeps its shape. Often, on one line, the tubs are formed, filled with the product and sealed with foil or film straight away. For the lid to fit tightly, the tub's measurements must be very exact.
Most tubs are made of polypropylene. It can take heat and is not harmed by fats. Polystyrene used to be common, but it is hard to recycle, so it is being phased out. Plant-based materials that can break down are also being tried. Before you throw a tub away, it is best to rinse it and put it out with plastic recycling, if your town accepts it.
