🏷️ Cru Bourgeois
A title for good Médoc châteaux left out of the 1855 classification.
Cru Bourgeois is a title for good châteaux in the Médoc, Bordeaux, France, that were not included in the famous 1855 classification. In 1855 the best châteaux were chosen for a World's Fair, and many good estates were left outside it. Cru Bourgeois brought such estates together.
The title has three levels: Cru Bourgeois, Cru Bourgeois Supérieur and Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel. Under the 2020 rules the title is granted for five years, so an estate must confirm its level from time to time. Médoc châteaux can take part, and independent experts assess the wines for quality. The label shows the title and the vintage.
Cru Bourgeois belongs to wine classifications. Cru Bourgeois wines are usually cheaper than châteaux from the 1855 classification and are seen as a good choice for those who want Bordeaux quality at a moderate price. The main grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
