Also known as: milking parlor

A room where cows are brought for milking (herringbone, rotary).

A milking parlour is a room on a farm where cows are brought to be milked. The cows come in as a group and stand in their places, and workers milk them with milking machines. Then the cows go back to the barn, and the next group comes in.

The best-known type is the herringbone. The cows stand in two rows at an angle to the aisle, like the branches of a fir tree. The milkers work in a pit in the middle, so the udders are at a handy height. In large herringbone parlours, two people can milk up to 600 cows.

Another type is the rotary. This is a large turning circle with 12 to 100 places for cows. A cow steps onto the platform, is milked while the circle slowly turns, and steps off at the end of the turn. These parlours are built for very large herds of more than a thousand cows. Today, milking robots are used more and more. A cow comes to be milked by herself whenever she wants, day or night. The robot cleans the teats and attaches the teat cups, and a computer runs the whole process.
