๐ Riparia Gloire de Montpellier
A classic rootstock selected in France from wild Vitis riparia.
Riparia Gloire de Montpellier is a classic rootstock selected in France from wild riparia. Riparia, or Vitis riparia, is an American grape species that is not harmed by phylloxera, the tiny pest insect. Rootstocks based on this species became an important part of the fight against the pest in Europe.
Gloire de Montpellier was selected in France after phylloxera destroyed many vineyards. The vine was chosen for its ability to take grafts and its resistant roots. A grafted vine grows on it while the roots stay protected. It likes fresh, moist soils and tolerates limestone poorly, so it does not suit everywhere.
Many other rootstocks were bred with riparia: Kober 5BB, Millardet et Grasset 101, Selection Oppenheim 4 (SO4), Teleki 5C and Teleki 8B, Kober 125 AA. It is tied to the general idea of the rootstock and to the history of grape varieties in France. Newer rootstocks are used today, but this one remains an important milestone.
