🍼 Baby bottle
Also known as: feeding bottle
For feeding a baby milk or formula.
Baby bottle is a bottle with a teat from which a baby is fed milk or formula. A baby bottle is used to feed a baby with expressed breast milk or infant formula. The teat at the end is shaped like a breast, and the baby sucks the milk out on its own.
People have fed babies from special vessels for a long time. In ancient Egypt, animal horns were used for this, and later clay pots with a spout. There were bottles made of glass, leather and wood, and in the 18th century of tin and silver. In 1841 a glass bottle was patented in the USA, and in 1845 rubber teats appeared. For a long time, bottles with a long tube were popular. They were hard to clean, and because of germs they were nicknamed “murder bottles.”
Later, bottles became simpler and cleaner: sterilisers appeared, along with glass that can take boiling water. Today bottles are mostly made of plastic, and also of glass, steel and silicone. Many countries have banned a harmful substance called bisphenol A in them. The bottle and teat must be washed well and sterilised.
