🫙 Jug
Also known as: pitcher, milk jug
Household vessel for milk.
A jug is a vessel with a handle and a spout that makes it easy to pour liquid. People do not usually drink from the jug itself; they pour from it into glasses and cups. Jugs are made of clay, metal or glass, and now often of plastic.
Jugs have been known since ancient times. There were clay jugs in ancient Egypt and glass ones in ancient Rome. In villages, milk was often put into a clay jug after milking. Clay keeps things cool, and the narrow neck protects the milk from dust.
Before bottles appeared, the milkman went along the streets and poured milk straight into his customers' jugs. Today a jug is more often used on the table. Milk is served in it with breakfast or porridge. In some countries, a soft bag of milk is placed into a special jug. In the US, a plastic bottle with a handle is called a “milk jug”.
