🥛 Glass
Also known as: tumbler, glass of milk
The classic vessel for milk.
A glass is a drinking vessel with a flat bottom, no stem and usually no handle. It is made of glass, plastic or metal. A glass of milk is a familiar image from childhood and advertising.
In English, this kind of glass is called a tumbler. Where the name comes from is not known for sure. One version says old tumblers had round bottoms and tipped over when set down. Another says the bottom was heavy, and the glass stood itself back up, like a roly-poly toy.
There are many kinds of glasses: for water, juice, milk and cocktails. Cold milk is usually drunk from a simple tall glass. Hot drinks are easier to drink from a mug or a cup with a handle, because glass heats up quickly. In cooking, a glass is often used as a measure. For example, recipes for pancakes or porridge say “a glass of milk”.
