🪣 Bucket

Packaging ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1

Also known as: pail

For hand milking and carrying milk on the farm.

The bucket is one of the oldest containers for milk. In hand milking, the milk goes straight into a bucket. First the udder and teats are washed. Then the teat is squeezed at its base with the thumb and index finger, and the other fingers press downward. This makes the milk come out in a stream. Milking is usually done with both hands.

A stainless steel or enamel bucket is good for milking. It must be clean: dirt and bacteria spoil milk. After milking, the milk is strained and poured into a churn, a milk can or a jar.

Today, on large farms, cows are milked by machines. A machine milks one cow in 5–7 minutes, 2–3 times a day. The milk flows through pipes straight into a cooled tank. But the bucket is still needed on small farms. Calves are also often fed from a bucket with a teat.
