🦠 Grapevine pests
Insects, mites and animals that eat the vine or its berries.
Grapevine pests are insects, mites and animals that eat the vine, its leaves or its berries. They reduce the harvest and spoil grape quality. Some pests also spread diseases.
The great trouble of the past was phylloxera, a tiny aphid that feeds on vine roots. In the 19th century it destroyed huge vineyard areas in Europe. Other pests include the grape berry moths, the grape mites, leafhoppers, spotted-wing drosophila (a fly that lays eggs in ripe berries) and wasps. Birds like the berries, and in some places wild boar ravage vineyards.
Different measures help against pests: vines grafted onto resistant rootstocks, traps, protective nets and beneficial insects. For example, predatory mites eat harmful mites. Chemical products are used with care because they can harm nature. Dealing with pests is part of vineyard care, just like fighting diseases.
