🍷 Horizontal bottle storage
Corked bottles are laid on their side so the cork stays moist.
Horizontal storage means bottles with a cork are laid on their side. This way the wine touches the cork and keeps it moist. A moist cork does not dry out and does not let in extra air.
This rule applies to bottles with a natural cork. If the cork dries, it shrinks, air gets into the bottle, and the wine spoils faster. Screw caps and plastic stoppers do not need this, but in practice almost all bottles in a cellar are stored lying down.
The place is a wine cellar or a cool dark room. Lying bottles are easy to stack in racks and save space. Other rules go with this one: steady temperature, humidity and no light.
If a wine will be opened in the next few days, special conditions are not needed. Bottles are stored lying mostly when they will rest for months or years.
