🍷 Marani
A Georgian wine cellar with qvevri buried in the floor.
Marani is a Georgian wine cellar. In it, large clay vessels called qvevri are buried in the ground. It is the place where wine is made and kept. The word marani is also used for the whole house that has such a cellar.
Qvevri are set into the floor and covered with earth so the temperature stays even and cool all year. Grape juice ferments in them, often together with skins and seeds, and then the wine settles. The top of the qvevri is closed with a lid and sealed. This is known as the Georgian qvevri method, regarded as one of the oldest. In 2013 UNESCO added it to its list of intangible cultural heritage.
Marani is tied to the idea of a wine cellar in general but has its own national character. In a Georgian village the marani was long the centre of family life and the place where guests were invited to the table. Many families still make wine in a marani for themselves.
