A pediatrician is a children's doctor. They treat and look after children from birth to the teenage years. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises seeing a pediatrician up to age 21. The word “pediatrics” is made of two Greek words, “child” and “doctor”, meaning “healing children”.
In the story of milk, the pediatrician matters because they help with a baby's feeding. They answer questions about breastfeeding and check that the child is growing and gaining weight well. If breastfeeding does not work out, the pediatrician helps choose a baby formula. They advise when to start solid foods. The WHO advises feeding only breast milk for the first 6 months, then adding other food while continuing to breastfeed.
Pediatrics as a separate field is fairly young. The first widely recognised children's hospital opened in Paris in 1802. London's Great Ormond Street children's hospital was founded in 1852. The word “pediatrics” was brought into English in 1859 by the doctor Abraham Jacobi. He also became the first professor in this field.
