A freight forwarder is a worker who arranges the transport of goods and handles their paperwork. A freight forwarder arranges the transport of goods and handles the paperwork. They usually do not drive the truck themselves. Their job is to agree with the carrier, check that the goods are loaded correctly, and hand them over to the receiver with the right documents.

In the dairy industry, a forwarder works with refrigerated trucks, which have a cooling unit. They check that the truck body is cooled to the right temperature. They count the boxes and check the delivery notes, the documents that say what is being carried and how much. When the goods are handed over to a warehouse or shop, they complete the receiving paperwork. If packaging is damaged or the temperature is wrong, they record it in the documents. For shipments to other countries, the forwarder also prepares customs papers.

The profession is old. The first international freight forwarders are thought to be London innkeepers of the early 19th century. They stored their guests' belongings and sent them on. Later, companies appeared that arranged the transport of goods by rail and by steamship. The International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA) calls the forwarder the “architect of transport”.
