👷 Dairy industry careers
Also known as: dairy jobs
The people who work with milk all the way from pasture to table.
Dairy industry careers are the jobs involved in producing, transporting and selling milk and dairy products. The dairy sector brings together people of very different professions — from herders and milking parlour operators to cheese plant technologists, milk tanker drivers, baristas and dietitians. According to the FAO, about 150 million households worldwide are engaged in milk production, most of them small farms in developing countries, where milk gives the family a regular income and food.
The journey of milk is usually divided into several links. On the farm, animals are fed, treated and milked. At the plant, milk is tested, cleaned, pasteurised and processed into products. Logistics ensures fast, refrigerated delivery, because raw milk is highly perishable. Retail and food service bring products to the consumer, while doctors and dietitians help people include dairy in their diet properly — from breastfeeding to diets for lactose intolerance.
Many jobs in the sector today involve technology and data: milking robots, cow health sensors, laboratory analysers and automated filling lines. At the same time, traditional crafts live on — cheesemaking, buttermaking, and the work of herders and nomadic pastoralists.
