🚛 Milk tanker driver
Also known as: milk truck driver
Collects chilled raw milk from farms and takes it to the plant.
A milk tanker driver is a worker who drives a special tank truck carrying raw milk. A milk tanker driver collects raw milk from farms and takes it to the dairy plant. A milk tanker is a truck with a large tank that keeps the cold well. The work starts early: the milk has to be picked up on time, while it is fresh.
On the farm, after milking, the milk is kept in a cooling tank, usually at +3…+4 °C. The driver connects a hose and pumps the milk into the truck's tank. Then he often starts the automatic washing of the farm tank himself. He makes sure the hoses and tank are clean and that the milk does not warm up on the way.
Like any truck driver, he checks the vehicle before and after each trip and writes down any faults. He keeps a record of working hours and follows special rules for carrying liquids: a liquid load sloshes in the tank and changes how the truck handles on the road. In the past, milk was carried in churns on carts, and later in railway tank cars. From the late 1950s, when cooling units and good roads appeared, most farms switched to cooled tanks, and milk began to be collected by tanker trucks.
