🍷 Wine in carton
Cheap wine in a carton, like the ones for milk or juice.
Wine in a carton is wine sold not in a glass bottle but in multilayer cardboard packaging, similar to cartons for milk or juice. Inside there is usually a thin layer that protects the drink from air and light. A cap with a spout lets you open and close the carton.
This packaging appeared as a cheaper, lighter alternative to glass. A carton does not break, takes little space and is cheap to transport. That is why simple everyday wines, meant to be drunk within months rather than aged for years, are more often sold this way.
For wine this is the same principle as for other drinks: milk and juices are filled into the same kind of carton, known as Tetra Pak. Shared packaging links wine, juice and milk on the shop shelf.
The taste of the wine does not depend on the shape of the pack, but for long keeping glass and a cork are still preferred. An opened carton should be kept cool.
