🍷 Bag-in-box

Packaging ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 4

A plastic bag with a tap inside a cardboard box.

Bag-in-box is a plastic bag with a tap placed inside a cardboard box. The wine is in the bag and the tap is brought out. The volume ranges from a few litres, such as 3 or 5, to large packs for cafés. This packaging became popular in the 20th century.

The main advantage is that air does not get in. When wine is poured, the bag collapses, and oxygen does not touch what is left. So opened wine keeps longer than in an ordinary bottle: for several weeks. This is handy for those who drink a little at a time. The package is also light, does not break and takes little space.

Bag-in-box is one of the replacements for the glass bottle, like the can. Most often simple wines for the everyday table are packed in it, but quality ones exist too. The prejudice that "boxed wine is bad" is not entirely true: quality depends on the wine itself. For transport and storage the package is very practical.
