π Areni
An old red grape of Armenia from the Vayots Dzor province.
Areni is an ancient red grape from Armenia. It grows in the Vayots Dzor province in the south of the country. The grape shares its name with the village of Areni, which is also a wine district.
Near Areni the Areni-1 cave was found. Remains of a winery were discovered in it, with an age estimated at about 6,100 years. It is one of the oldest known wineries in the world. That is why Armenian wine is often called ancient.
The grape likes stony slopes at high altitude. Winters there are cold, summers hot and dry, and the grapes ripen slowly. Wine from Areni can be ruby in colour, with notes of cherry and spice and clear acidity. It goes well with meat and cheese.
Besides Vayots Dzor, there are vineyards in other provinces of Armenia: Armavir, Aragatsotn, Tavush, Syunik and Kotayk. Areni can be seen as a calling card of Armenian winemaking.
