๐บ๏ธ Armenian wine
The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes and appellations.
Armenian wine means the wine and winemaking of Armenia. Armenia is among the oldest wine countries in the world. In a cave near the village of Areni a winery about 6,000 years old was found, one of the oldest known.
Vineyards lie in foothills and on high plateaus, where summers are hot and winters cold. The main areas are the Ararat Valley, Aragatsotn (Ashtarak), Vayots Dzor, Tavush, Syunik and Kotayk. Vayots Dzor is known for the ancient Areni variety, named after the village.
Local varieties include Areni, Arevshat, Hadisi and Anahit. Besides ordinary wines Armenia makes fortified and dessert wines, as well as grape brandy. In Armenia, as across the Caucasus, churchkhela is popular, a sweet of grape juice and nuts. Today the country's winemaking is growing again, and old varieties are returning to the market.
