🍷 Winery
A place where grapes are turned into wine.
A winery is a place where grapes are turned into wine. Grapes are received here, crushed, the juice is sent to ferment, the wine is aged and then bottled. A winery can be a small family workshop or a large plant with vats, pipes and a bottling line.
Grapes are brought from the vineyard in crates or in the back of a truck and processed right away. A winery has tanks, presses, pumps and often a wine cellar with barrels. The winemaker runs the work. The job is to choose the moment of harvest, watch the fermentation and decide how the wine will be aged.
In layout a winery resembles other places where a product ferments and matures. It is compared with a creamery or a dairy plant: vats, pipes, cleanliness and temperature control. Some wineries welcome visitors with tours and tastings. The word winery can mean the building itself or the whole business.
