📜 Fronsac

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1

Red wines from the hills near Libourne, next to Saint-Émilion and Pomerol.

Fronsac is an appellation in Bordeaux on the right bank, on hills near the city of Libourne in France. The name is protected as a PDO. Still red wines are made here, mainly from Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The district lies next to the more famous Saint-Émilion and Pomerol.

The vineyards stand on hills. The soils are limestone and clay, as with the neighbours. This gives the wine structure and freshness. Fronsac wines are usually full-bodied, with notes of plum, dark berries and spice, and noticeable tannins. When young they are firmer than in Saint-Émilion and benefit from several years of ageing.

Fronsac is regarded as one of the best-value areas of Bordeaux. Its wines cost less than those of its famous neighbours but are close in style. For getting to know the right-bank style it is a good choice.

There are many small châteaux in the district, and many are family-run. Next to it lies another appellation, Canon-Fronsac, with slightly different sites.
