📜 Pomerol

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1

A small appellation near Libourne, famous for soft Merlot wines, including Pétrus.

Pomerol is a small French appellation (PDO) in Bordeaux, near the town of Libourne, on the right bank of the Dordogne. It is known for soft red wines made from Merlot. Here is also made the famous Pétrus, one of the most expensive wines in the world.

The area is small, about 800 hectares, and Pomerol has no official classification of châteaux like the Médoc. Soils vary: clay, gravel, sand. A clay patch on the plateau is especially prized, as it suits Merlot. The wines are velvety, with aromas of plum, dark berries and truffle, and soft tannins. Cabernet Franc is added to Merlot, sometimes with a little of other grapes.

Pomerol belongs to the still red wines of the Libournais. Good wines can be drunk young, but the best age for years. Because of small volumes and prestige, prices of the best-known ones are high, although more affordable bottles exist.
