🥃 Hors d'âge cognac
An age mark for cognac: the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend has been aged in oak for at least 10 years, the same as for XO.
Hors d’âge (French for “beyond age”) is an age mark on cognac. Under the AOC Cognac specification it belongs to “age account 10”, like XO, Extra or Ancestral: the cognac eau-de-vie in the bottle, including the youngest, has been aged in oak for at least ten years. So, despite the name, the age behind this mark is perfectly well defined.
The age of cognac is recorded in “age accounts” (comptes d’âge). The current specification, approved on 10 June 2026, ties each mark to a minimum account: VS and “3 stars” account 2, VSOP and Réserve account 4, Napoléon account 6, XO, Hors d’âge, Extra and others account 10. The Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac (BNIC) translates this into years for the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend. The separate marks XXO and Extra Extra Old require at least 14 years.
If a label carries several marks from different accounts, the cognac must meet the oldest of them. Marks must not mislead the buyer about age. EU Regulation 2019/787 likewise requires that a stated age refers to the youngest spirit component.
The remaining rules are as for any cognac: double distillation in a copper Charentais still, ageing in oak only, and sale at 40% ABV or more. The mark Hors d’âge is also used for other French brandies, but with a different minimum: for calvados, from six years.
Why this matters to you. Hors d’âge on a cognac does not mean “older than XO”: both marks guarantee at least ten years for the youngest eau-de-vie. The label promises only a minimum; the actual eaux-de-vie in the blend may be older. WHO reminds: there is no safe dose of alcohol.
