🥃 Fine Champagne
An additional name for cognac: a blend of eaux-de-vie only from the Grande and Petite Champagne crus, with at least 50% Grande Champagne.
Fine Champagne is an additional geographical name attached to the controlled designation “Cognac”. It marks a blend of cognac eaux-de-vie from just two crus, Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne, in which the Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie make up at least 50%. There is no separate territory with this name, and it has nothing to do with champagne wine.
This is laid down in the current AOC Cognac specification, approved on 10 June 2026. The boundaries of the crus were set by the decree of 13 January 1938, based on the delimitation made by Coquand in the late 19th century. Grande Champagne lies in the Charente département, notably around Segonzac, while Petite Champagne lies in Charente and Charente-Maritime, around Barbezieux, Archiac and Jonzac. The soils of both crus are fairly shallow clay-limestone soils on soft Cretaceous chalky limestone.
The specification describes Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie as very fine, with a floral bouquet: they mature slowly and need long ageing in oak. Petite Champagne eaux-de-vie are similar but reach their best quality sooner. Fine Champagne combines both profiles.
All other rules are the same as for any cognac: double distillation in a copper Charentais still to 73.7% ABV, ageing in oak only for at least two years, and sale at 40% ABV or more. Alongside Fine Champagne, the names “Grande Fine Champagne” and “Petite Fine Champagne” are permitted as synonyms of the two crus. Under EU law, cognac belongs to category 4, “wine spirit”.
Why this matters to you. “Fine Champagne” on a cognac is neither sparkling wine nor the Champagne region in north-eastern France, but a blend of two Cognac crus. The name says nothing about age: that is shown by separate marks such as VS, VSOP or XO. WHO reminds: there is no safe dose of alcohol.
