🍷 Jeroboam
A 3-litre bottle named after a biblical king.
Jeroboam is a large wine bottle. It usually holds 3 litres, that is four ordinary 0.75-litre bottles. The name is taken from the biblical king Jeroboam. In the wine world such bottles were given the names of kings and figures of the Bible. The series of sizes goes like this: the standard bottle of 0.75 litre, the magnum of 1.5, the Jeroboam of 3 litres, then bigger bottles: Rehoboam, Methuselah and others. The names rise in order. Sizes and names differ slightly between regions. For example, in Bordeaux "Jeroboam" is used for a different volume. Large bottles are made for special occasions. Wine in a big bottle matures more slowly: there is less air relative to volume, so it keeps better. Such bottles are often given as gifts and shown off at celebrations. Sparkling wine takes thicker glass. The Jeroboam is one of the sizes in the general series. It is harder to handle: the bottle is heavy and pouring from it has to be done carefully.
