🍷 Sulphite sensitivity
In some people, more often those with asthma, sulphites cause shortness of breath or a rash.
Sulphite sensitivity is the body's reaction to sulphur compounds added to wine and other foods. Sulphites protect against oxidation and unwanted bacteria. Some are also formed during fermentation itself.
In some people, more often those with asthma, sulphites cause breathlessness, coughing or a rash. This does not happen to everyone: most people tolerate sulphites without trouble. A headache after wine is more often linked to alcohol than to sulphites, though this varies from person to person.
That is why labels say "contains sulphites" when their amount passes a set level. It is part of the allergen labelling rules. A related topic is lactose intolerance: some people tolerate both sulphites and lactose poorly. If you suspect a reaction, ask a doctor. People with a strong reaction may prefer wines marked as low in sulphites, and should always tell their doctor about it.

Frequently asked questions
What is sulphite sensitivity?
A reaction some people have to sulphites: breathlessness, cough or a rash. It is more common in people with asthma.
Why do bottles say "contains sulphites"?
It is a labelling requirement: sulphites count as allergens and their presence must be declared.
Do sulphites cause headaches after wine?
There is little scientific support for this. Headaches are more often linked to alcohol itself. If in doubt, see a doctor.
