π Verdelho
A white grape from Portugal, known for Madeira and Australian dry wines.
Verdelho is a white grape variety from Portugal. It is especially known for Madeira: on the island of Madeira it makes wines of different sweetness. Verdelho also grows in the Douro valley and in the Azores, including Pico, Graciosa and Biscoitos.
The vine does well in a warm climate. The berries keep their acidity even in heat, so the wine stays fresh. In Portugal Verdelho gives wines with bright acidity and a citrus aroma. In Madeira it makes medium-dry wines of middling sweetness.
Verdelho became known beyond Portugal too: it was planted in Australia, where it makes dry white wines. It is in the general list of grape varieties and belongs to fortified wines as one of the main grapes for Madeira.
