The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes, appellations.

Portuguese wine is the wine and winemaking of Portugal. According to OIV estimates, in 2025 the country's vineyards covered 171 thousand ha. Wine production was 6.0 million hl, the lowest since 2011: record rains alternated with heat, followed by vine diseases and drought.

Portugal is rich in native varieties. According to the OIV, the ten most widely planted cover only 55% of the area. First comes Tempranillo, known here as Aragonez or Tinta Roriz, followed by Touriga Franca, Castelão, Fernão Pires, Touriga Nacional, Baga, Síria and Arinto.

As of October 2026, the EU's eAmbrosia register lists 30 Portuguese wine designations of origin and 14 geographical indications. The best known are Port from the Douro, Madeira, Vinho Verde, Dão, Bairrada and Alentejo.

The Alto Douro Wine Region is a UNESCO World Heritage site: its vineyard terraces cover about 24,600 ha, wine has been made here for roughly 2000 years, and the quality of port has been defined and regulated since 1756. During fermentation, grape spirit is added to port, usually one part to four parts of young wine, so some sugar remains and the strength is 19–22%. It is aged in Vila Nova de Gaia.

The Portuguese are drinking more and more wine: a record 5.6 million hl in 2025. Exports reached 3.4 million hl worth 1.0 billion euros; the top market by volume is Angola, and by value, France.

Why it matters to you. Once opened, port keeps for different lengths of time: Vintage 1–2 days, LBV 4–5 days, Ruby 8–10 days, Tawny 3–4 weeks. The names Porto and Douro are protected in the EU, so they guarantee that the wine comes from the Douro.
