🍇 Traminer

Grape variety ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 2

An ancient group of white grapes that includes Gewürztraminer.

Traminer is an ancient group of white grape varieties. The famous Gewürztraminer belongs to it. The group comes from Central Europe, and the best-known wines come from Alsace in France and from the Jura, where the variety is called Savagnin.

The vine gives berries with a pinkish skin. The wine is aromatic: it smells of rose, petals and spice. Traminer can make both dry and sweet wines.

Its main feature is its family tree. It is one of the oldest known varieties, and many others descend from it or from close relatives. DNA analysis shows that, for example, Grüner Veltliner and Sauvignon Blanc have Traminer (Savagnin) among their parents. So Traminer is an "ancestor" of a whole family of varieties. That is why it is studied not only for wine but for the history of the grape.
