🍷 Wine tanker ship
A ship with tanks for carrying wine in bulk by sea.
A wine tanker is a ship with tanks for carrying wine in bulk by sea. The wine travels not in bottles but in large batches, in tanks filled at the port of departure.
Why is this needed? Shipping wine in bulk is cheaper than in bottles. Bottles are heavy, take up a lot of space and need packing and protection. A tank holds more wine, and transport costs less. So wine that will be bottled later in the destination country is shipped in bulk. Such wine is called bulk wine.
How does it work? The ship's holds contain tanks of stainless steel or with a protective lining. They are washed and checked before loading. During the voyage the temperature is monitored so the wine does not spoil. Sometimes a layer of inert gas is kept above the wine to stop oxidation.
Wine tankers carry wine between producing countries and countries where it is bottled. It is not the most visible, but an important, stage of the journey of wine from vine to glass.
