🍷 Wine auction
Selling rare wines to whoever bids the most.
A wine auction is a sale of rare and collectible wines to whoever offers the most money. Old vintages, large bottles and whole cases are put up. Buyers bid in person or online, and the winner pays the agreed price plus a fee.
Wine at auction is expensive because there is little of it, and many bottles can never be made again. The price depends on the producer, the vintage, the condition of the bottle and how it was stored. So it matters that a wine has a clear history: where it comes from, where it lay and who owned it.
The best-known example is the Hospices de Beaune auction in Burgundy, held every November, which sells wine from vineyards owned by an old hospital. The money goes to its upkeep and to charity. The auction is a separate part of the wine market, while the wine itself remains an ordinary drink that needs proper storage.
