A restaurant's list of wines with prices.

A wine list is a list of the wines a restaurant or bar offers, with prices. Wines are usually grouped by colour, country, region or type. For each wine the list gives the name, the producer, the vintage and the price per bottle. Wines by the glass are often listed separately.

The list is put together by a sommelier or manager. A good list fits the restaurant’s cuisine, takes account of guests’ tastes and prices. It may hold both simple inexpensive wines and rare bottles. Sometimes it runs to dozens of pages, in other places to just one.

What the list is for. It helps the guest choose a wine for a dish and know what to expect. If the choice is hard to make alone, you can ask the sommelier for advice and state your budget. Wine lists can be printed or electronic.

Today wines on the list are often described briefly: grape, region, style. The text may include words like “dry”, “off-dry” or “aged”. The wine list is linked to wine and to the profession of the sommelier who compiles it. Alcohol is for adults.
