The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes and appellations.

Azerbaijani wine is the wine and winemaking of a country on the border of Europe and Asia, in the South Caucasus. Grapes have been grown here since deep antiquity, and the country has kept its own winemaking tradition.

Vineyards are spread over several areas. Among them are Ganja-Gazakh, Shirvan, Absheron, Guba-Khachmaz, Sheki-Zagatala, Karabakh, Nakhchivan and Mil-Mugan. Each area has its own climate: hot and dry in places, cooler in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus.

The country is known for local grapes. Whites include Shani and Bayan Shirey, reds Kishmish Black and Matrasa. They make wines little known outside the region. Alongside them international varieties are also used.

The country's wines are part of the wider Caucasus tradition, where grapes, feasting and hospitality have long been tied together.
