🗺️ Estonian wine
The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes and appellations.
Estonian wine is the wine of a country on the Baltic Sea. The climate is cold and damp, so winegrowing is very limited. There are few vineyards, and they are mostly experiments and small farms. Cold-hardy hybrid grapes are grown that survive winter and manage to ripen in a short summer.
Most local wines are made from fruit and berries. They are produced from apples, currants, rhubarb, strawberries, blueberries, sea buckthorn and other fruit that grows well in a northern climate. Wine from apples and berries is a long-standing tradition in the Baltic countries. There are also wines from grapes, but volumes are small.
Estonian wine belongs to the wines of Europe and is tied to the island of Saaremaa, where the sea makes the climate milder. The country has no large winemaking tradition, but interest in local drinks is growing. Bottles are usually sold locally and in small shops rather than exported.
