Wine-producing countries, regions and appellations of Europe.

Wines of Europe are the wines of the countries and regions of the European continent. Europe is the home of classical winemaking and the world's main wine area. The largest producers here are France, Italy and Spain. But wine is also made in Portugal, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia and many other countries.

European wines are characterised by a system of protected names. Wine is named by the place where it is made, and the rules for each name are strictly described. In the European Union these are PDO, protected designation of origin, and PGI, protected geographical indication. This lets the buyer know where a bottle comes from and which rules the producer followed.

Styles vary greatly. In the north, in Germany and Austria, there are many light white wines from Riesling. In the south, in Spain, Italy and Greece, there are more rich reds and fortified wines. Portugal makes port and Madeira, France makes Champagne and the wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy.

Every country in this section is a story of its own, with its own grapes, traditions and names.
