The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes, appellations.

Maltese wine is the wine of the island of Malta, in the middle of the Mediterranean. Summers here are hot and dry, winters mild, soils stony and plots small. Grapes grow on Malta itself and on the neighbouring island of Gozo.

Island winemaking is small in volume, and most of the wine is drunk locally and not exported. In the past Maltese wines were made by simple methods for local people. Today dry red, white and rosé wines are made, as well as sparkling ones.

One of the local varieties is Gellewza, a red. It gives light red wines with a red berry aroma. There is also a white variety, Girgentina. Besides them, imported varieties such as Chardonnay and Merlot are planted. Maltese wine belongs to the group of European wines. For a visitor it is a chance to try wine that is rarely sold abroad and to see small vineyards among rocks and sea water.
