Rémy Cointreau is a French family-run group of cognac, liqueurs and spirits headquartered in Paris. According to the company, its origins go back to 1724, when the Rémy Martin cognac house was established. The group was formed in 1990 by merging the holding companies of the Hériard Dubreuil and Cointreau families, and has been called Rémy Cointreau since 1991.

History. Cointreau & Cie was founded by the Cointreau brothers in 1849. In 1924 André Renaud acquired Rémy Martin, and in 1965 André Hériard Dubreuil took over from his father-in-law. In 1989 the Rémy Martin group acquired Mount Gay rum, and in 2000 Bols Royal Distilleries, which brought in Metaxa. In 2012 it acquired the Bruichladdich distillery on Islay, in 2017 the Domaine des Hautes Glaces and Westland distilleries, and in 2020 the cognac house J.R. Brillet and the champagne house Telmont.

Portfolio. The company's website lists the cognacs Louis XIII and Rémy Martin, and under liqueurs and spirits Cointreau, Metaxa, Mount Gay rum, St-Rémy, Bruichladdich, The Botanist, Westland, Hautes Glaces, Belle de Brillet and Champagne Telmont.

Where it is made. According to the company, the Rémy Martin house has its origins in the Charente region, Mount Gay rum was founded in Barbados in 1703, and the Bruichladdich distillery on Islay, built in 1881, produces single malt whiskies.

Why it matters to you. Rémy Martin and Cointreau are different drinks with different histories: a cognac and an orange liqueur. What they share is a group, not a recipe, so the type of drink and the age statement on the label tell you about taste and maturation. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
