Nature ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 3

An oak forest in central France planted for the navy that now supplies barrels.

The Tronçais Forest is a large oak forest in central France, near the town of Montluçon. It was set up in the 17th century on the orders of the minister Colbert to supply timber for the ships of the royal navy.

The trees grew tall and straight, and today it is one of the best-known oak forests in Europe. The main species are pedunculate and sessile oak. The ships are long gone, but the wood now goes into barrels. Coopers look for oaks with dense, fine-grained wood, which gives its flavour to wine slowly.

Wine matures in such a barrel for many months. Oak adds vanilla, spice and soft tannins, and the taste becomes more complex. Barrels from Tronçais are valued for a delicate, restrained character.

Tronçais shows how forest and vineyard are linked. It is one of the forests that supply French oak, from which barrels are made around the world. In wine, the tree matters as well as the grape.
