🧺 Market
Also known as: farmers' market
Direct sales by farmers.
A market is a place where farmers sell their products straight to buyers, without a factory or a shop in between. A farmers' market can be outdoors or under a roof, very small or several blocks long.
Markets sell vegetables, fruit, honey, bread, baked goods and, of course, dairy products: milk, cream, butter, cheese and ice cream. Curd cheese and sour cream are often found there too. Many shoppers go to the market for freshness, variety and handmade cheeses made right on the farm. The seller is often the farmer or someone from the farmer's family, and you can ask them how the product was made.
Markets existed long before the industrial age. But back then they were general bazaars where everything was sold. Separate farmers' markets became especially popular from the mid-2000s. Raw milk is sometimes sold at markets too. It has not been pasteurized — heated to kill dangerous germs. So countries have their own rules for selling it, and buyers should ask how the milk was stored.
