🗺️ Albanian wine
The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes and appellations.
Albanian wine is the wine of a country in the Balkans, on the coast of the Adriatic and Ionian seas. Grapes have been grown here since deep antiquity, and winemaking is part of folk culture. Albania belongs to the wines of Europe. The country can be split into three parts: Northern, Central and Southern Albania. In the south, near the town of Korçë, vines grow at altitude where it is cooler. The climate in most areas is Mediterranean, warm and sunny, suited to red varieties. Albania grows many local varieties. Among reds, Shesh i Zi and Kallmet are known, among whites Shesh i Bardhë. There are also international ones, such as Merlot and Cabernet. Part of the wine is made on small family farms, part in larger wineries. In recent years the number of private wineries has been growing, and wine quality has been improving. Albanian wine is still little known abroad, and mostly it is drunk in the country itself.
