๐ฅ Beefeater Crown Jewel
A strong Beefeater gin for travel retail: 50% ABV, ten botanicals including grapefruit peel; sold since 1993.
Beefeater Crown Jewel is the strongest expression of the Beefeater brand: 50% ABV (100 proof). It was released in 1993 for travel retail, meaning sale in airports, and named after the jewels of the British crown in the Tower of London. According to Difford's Guide, the current square bottle in deep purple appeared on 10 November 2022.
The recipe has the same nine botanicals as Beefeater London Dry Gin, plus a tenth: grapefruit peel. The original bottle was discontinued in 2009, when Beefeater 24 came out; according to Difford's Guide, it was the Crown Jewel recipe that led Desmond Payne to add tea botanicals to 24. The source gives no steeping time for this line. The owner is Pernod Ricard.
Why this matters to you. Crown Jewel is much stronger than the core line (40%) and Beefeater 24 (45%), so it is diluted differently and drunk in smaller measures. It is sold mainly in airports, so it may not appear in ordinary shops. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
