🧪 Calories
Also known as: food energy, energy value
~60 kcal per 100 mL of 3.2% milk.
Calories show how much energy food gives. They are measured in kilocalories (kcal). 100 ml of cow's milk with about 3.2% fat has roughly 60 kcal. A glass of this milk gives about 150 kcal. Richer whole milk has a few more calories — about 66 kcal per 100 g.
The calories in milk come from three things: fat, lactose (milk sugar) and protein. Fat matters most. That is why skimmed milk is noticeably lighter than whole milk, while cream and butter have far more calories. Between animals, the difference is huge. Reindeer and seal milk is very fatty and rich. Their young need a lot of energy in the cold.
In an everyday diet, it makes sense to count milk as food, not as water. The calories are easy to find on the pack. Sweet dairy products — condensed milk, ice cream, sweet yogurts and glazed curd snacks — also give calories from added sugar. The NHS advises adults to choose lower-fat products with less sugar.
