🥃 Connemara Original
Base version of Connemara with no age statement: peated Irish single malt whisky, double distilled, 40% ABV.
Connemara Original is the base version of the Irish single malt whisky Connemara, with no age statement. Difford's Guide dates the launch of this whisky to 1996 and gives its strength as 40% ABV. It is the gentlest entry point into the brand's peated whiskies: the smoke is clear but not sharp.
How it is made. Malted barley is dried over a peat fire, and the whisky is distilled twice at the Cooley distillery near Louth, not three times as is customary in Ireland. Difford's mentions an ageing of at least 8 years, although the label gives no age. The official brand description names sweet barley, peat smoke and baked apple in the aroma, and honey, light spice and vanilla from the oak cask on the palate.
Why this matters to you. Original is the starting point of the brand: compare it with Connemara 12 Year, where the age is stated on the label, and Connemara Cask Strength, which is undiluted and considerably stronger. If you want to understand how a peated Irish whisky differs from an Islay whisky, start with this version. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe amount of alcohol.
