🥃 Islay whisky

Protected spirit name ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 6 Updated:

Protected locality of Scotch whisky: the name Islay may appear only on Scotch distilled on the island of Islay, which has 10 distilleries.

Islay whisky (pronounced “EYE-la”) is Scotch distilled on the island of Islay in Argyll, off the west coast of Scotland. Islay is one of two protected localities under the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009: the name may be used on a label, packaging or in advertising only for genuine Scotch distilled on the island.

The boundary of the locality is simple: the whole island of Islay. The 2019 Scotch Whisky technical file lists it among the five regional names within the geographical indication. Similar names are also prohibited if they could mislead the buyer about where the whisky was distilled.

According to the Scotch Whisky Association’s (SWA) 2024 map, the island, about 40 km long and 13 km wide, has 10 distilleries: Ardbeg, Ardnahoe, Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila, Kilchoman, Lagavulin, Laphroaig and Port Ellen. The SWA says that most of Islay’s residents are connected with whisky production.

Islay is often battered by Atlantic storms. According to the SWA, sea spray soaks the peat used to dry the malt and reaches the warehouses where the casks lie. As a result, some of the island’s whiskies are powerful, with peat smoke and a hint of the sea, while distilleries in more sheltered places that use less peat make softer whiskies.

Why this matters to you. “Islay” on a label guarantees distillation on the island, but not necessarily strong smoke: each distillery chooses its own level of peating. The island’s name is written directly before the category. The remaining rules are the same as for all Scotch: at least three years in oak, 40% ABV or more, age taken from the youngest whisky. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe dose of alcohol.

Frequently asked questions

Is it true that all Islay whisky is peaty?

No. The SWA writes that some of the island’s whiskies are powerful and smoky, while distilleries in more sheltered places use less peat and make softer whiskies. According to the Scotch Whisky technical file, the level of peat, from none to heavy, is chosen by the distiller.

How is Islay pronounced?

“EYE-la” is the pronunciation given by the Scotch Whisky Association.

How many distilleries are there on Islay?

On the SWA’s 2024 map there are 10, including Ardnahoe and Port Ellen. The island is about 40 km long and 13 km wide.

Can Islay whisky be matured on the mainland?

Yes, within Scotland. Regulation 10 requires only distillation on Islay, and for any Scotch the law prohibits maturation outside Scotland.

How does the island’s name appear on the label?

Directly before the name of the category, for example “Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky”. Regulation 8(5) allows this if the whisky was really distilled on the island.
